MEF Grants are bringing Yoga into Madison District schools

Yoga during school is benefiting children at both Kings Road and Central Avenue Schools.

Teachers believe that yoga supports the Responsive Classroom initiative, specifically awareness of others, spatial awareness of an individual versus others, and positive thinking.  In addition, yoga supports social, physical and emotional health. During standardized testing, teachers use quick and easily implemented yoga to refresh students and help them calm themselves and refocus.  An MEF grant for a yoga teacher training program allowed a CAS teacher to become certified in yoga instruction and share her knowledge with other teachers.  The program has been a huge success – with teachers citing how yoga helps center the kids and reduce anxiety.  Anecdotal evidence indicates that following a yoga session, kids were more attentive in class and able to accomplish more work.
