Author Visit at MHS

Martha Witt is an author of short fiction and young adult novels and recently visited the MHS Creative Writing and AP Fiction classes to discuss her first novel, Broken as Things Are.

Martha Witt grew up in Hillsborough, North Carolina, the setting of her first novel. She has received grants from the New York Times Foundation as well as the Thomas J. Watson Foundation and has held residencies at both the Yaddo and Ragdale artist colonies. Her translations and short stories have appeared in several literary journals and anthologies.

E.L. Doctorow, author of Ragtime, had this to say about Broken as Things Are:

"A sensitive southern tale of weirdly imaginative children and hapless adults. Ms. Witt has staked out a territory somewhere between Harper Lee and Flannery O'Connor."
